Light, wind, earth...

Valdorcia, Tuscany, an iconic place that captured the heart of the photographer Haruko Nakamura. Through her emotionally charged photographs, Haruko conveys the universal connection between nature, humanity, and the joy of life.

From 1993 to 1998, Haruko Nakamura was so enchanted by Valdorcia that she traveled there multiple times from Japan—seven times in a single year!—to capture and document the rhythms of nature and life across every season.

Her photographs, imbued with a delicate sensitivity, radiate a world filled with light and capture the captivating charm of the Val d'Orcia and its breathtaking landscapes.

Haruko's gentle sensitivity allowed her to form a deep friendship with an elderly couple, Ivo and Ilda, former sharecroppers. Their daily life, still rooted in traditions passed down since the Renaissance, was vividly and colorfully captured through Haruko Nakamura's lens, prompting us to reflect on what truly matters in our modern age.

Twenty years later, photographs and testimonies remembering Haruko

Year 2025. Twenty years have passed since Haruko left us. The three photographic exhibitions taking place in Val d'Orcia during this period are graciously organized by Lorenza Santo, owner of Casa dell’Abate Naldi in San Quirico d'Orcia, with whom Haruko shared a long-standing relationship.

We would like to extend our heartfelt thanks to Kaori Shiina and Riccardo Nardi, owners of the nearby Manufacto Store gallery of craftsmanship and design, as well as to Luisa Cipolla (Lorenza’s daughter, who appears as a child in Haruko’s photographs) and her husband Matthias Ruge, owners of Agriturismo Il Rigo, for their tremendous collaboration and kindness.
