A wedding behind the scenes - in the cut flower garden

July, 5:00 am, 30° C.

This summer of 2017 was one of the driest and hottest I can remember.

That’s why I almost cannot believe we were able to grow such a multitude of beautiful flowers in our garden successfully.
The flowers are a passion of mine, but they are also part of our business as these beauties are grown to decorate our wedding tables, for bouquets and buttonholes.
These are the flowers I picked for Anke & Dominik’s wedding, together with Emma, who helped me and captured the essence of that morning!
In recent days, the garden has looked like a green oasis amidst the desert of our rolling golden hills, burnt by the Tuscan sun.

The only chance to keep these delicate flowers fresh until the wedding day is picking very early in the morning, storing them in cold water inside.This is just the second year that I have grown cut-flowers in the garden.

There is so much more to learn; and yet, I've already noticed so many differences from last year.
Some flowers flourished and strived, while some suffered the lack of water so much!
I’m also growing flowers completely new to me! Like the dahlias, which I have never grown before!It’s funny, but many guests told me that zinnias and dahlias used to be grown in almost any garden some years ago.

Now unfortunately they almost seem to have disappeared from home gardens.
I don’t remember ever seeing these flowers in my childhood, which is full of memories of wild daisies and poppies. Dahlias still hold an exotic charm for me.

But this year the real stars of the garden were sunflowers! Honestly they are not my favourite flowers, but looking at them, waving proudly beneath this blue sky, I also cannot resist their contagious good
